The healing process after a hair transplantation occurs in several phases. Here you will learn what you can expect in the first days, weeks and months after the operation.

Day 1-7
Immediately After Surgery
In the first days after hair transplantation, the scalp is sensitive. Mild swelling and scab formation are normal.
What to Expect: Scab formation, mild swelling, mild redness
Care: Do not touch scalp, use special shampoos
To Avoid: Scratching, sunlight, sports, swimming
Week 2-4
Scabs Begin to Loosen
The scabs begin to loosen slowly. The scalp continues to heal, and the swelling subsides.
What to Expect: Scabs loosen, swelling goes down
Care: Gentle washing, aftercare products as prescribed
To Avoid: Forcibly removing scabs, intense sun exposure
Month 2-3
Shock Loss Phase
During this phase, temporary hair loss (Shock Loss) may occur. This is completely normal and part of the natural healing process.
What to Expect: Temporary hair loss, transplanted hair falls out
Important: This is normal! The hair roots remain intact
Care: Continue gentle care, patience is important
Month 4-6
First Regrowth
The transplanted hairs begin to regrow. Initially they are fine and thin, but become stronger over time.
What to Expect: First visible hair growth, fine hairs
Growth: Approx. 30-40% of final result visible
Care: Normal hair care possible, continue to be gentle
Month 7-9
Significant Growth
Hair growth becomes significantly more visible. The hairs become thicker and denser, the result becomes increasingly natural.
What to Expect: Significantly visible growth, thicker hairs
Growth: Approx. 60-70% of final result visible
Result: More natural appearance, higher density
Month 10-12
Final Result
After about a year, the final result is achieved. The hairs have reached their natural structure, density and color.
What to Expect: Complete, natural result
Growth: 90-100% of final result achieved
Result: Natural hairline, high density, permanent result

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to the most common questions about hair transplantation. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us for a personal consultation.

What is a hair transplantation?

A hair transplantation is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are extracted from a donor area (usually the back of the head) and transplanted into the bald or thinning areas. The transplanted hairs grow permanently and retain their natural properties.

How long does the result of a hair transplantation last?

The result of a hair transplantation is permanent. The transplanted hairs come from the donor area, which is genetically resistant to hair loss. They grow back for a lifetime, as long as the hair roots remain healthy.

Is a hair transplantation painful?

During the operation, local anesthetics are used so you will not feel any pain. After the operation, mild discomfort may occur, which can be well controlled with prescription painkillers. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable.

How long does a hair transplantation take?

The duration depends on the number of grafts to be transplanted. A typical treatment with 3000-4000 grafts takes about 4-8 hours. Larger treatments with 5000-6000 grafts can take 8-10 hours.

Which method is the best: FUE, Sapphire FUE or DHI?

The best method depends on your individual needs. FUE is a proven standard method. Sapphire FUE offers faster healing and higher density. DHI enables maximum precision and control over growth direction. In a personal consultation, we can determine the optimal method for you.

How many grafts are needed?

The number of grafts needed depends on the extent of hair loss and the desired density. For milder hair loss, 2000-3000 grafts are often needed, for moderate hair loss 3000-4500 grafts, and for severe hair loss 4500-6000 grafts may be required.

Can I return to work the day after the operation?

Most patients can resume light office work after 2-3 days. Physically strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 1-2 weeks. We recommend taking 3-5 days of rest.

How long does healing take?

External healing (scab formation, swelling) is complete after 7-14 days. The transplanted hair falls out after 2-4 weeks (Shock Loss) and begins to regrow after 3-4 months. The final result is visible after about 12 months.

What is “Shock Loss” and is it normal?

Shock Loss is the temporary loss of transplanted hair 2-4 weeks after the operation. This is completely normal and part of the natural healing process. The hair roots remain intact and begin to regrow after 3-4 months.

When can I exercise again?

Light physical activities can be resumed after 1-2 weeks. Intense sports, swimming and sauna should be avoided for at least 3-4 weeks to prevent infections and not impair healing.

How do I care for my scalp after the operation?

In the first days, you should not touch or scratch the scalp. Use the shampoos and lotions we recommend. After 10-14 days, you can carefully wash with your fingertips. Avoid vigorous rubbing or scratching.

When will I see first results?

First visible results appear after 4-6 months, when the transplanted hairs begin to regrow. After 6-9 months, the result becomes significantly more visible. The final result is achieved after about 12 months.

How natural does the result look?

With a professionally performed hair transplantation, the result is very natural. The hairs are placed in the correct growth direction and density, so they are indistinguishable from natural hair. The hairline is individually adapted to your face shape.

Can I dye my hair after the transplantation?

Yes, after complete healing (approx. 4-6 weeks), you can dye your hair again. However, initially use gentle, ammonia-free colors and perform a compatibility test.

What is the success rate of a hair transplantation?

With a professionally performed hair transplantation, the success rate is over 95%. The transplanted hairs grow back permanently, provided the hair roots are healthy and aftercare is performed correctly.

What does a hair transplantation cost?

The cost depends on the number of grafts and the chosen method. FUE starts at around €2,500, Sapphire FUE at €3,000 and DHI at €3,500. In a personal consultation, you will receive an individual quote based on your needs.

Are there financing options?

Yes, Medifue offers flexible financing options. We are happy to advise you about various installment payment options so you can pay for your hair transplantation in convenient installments.

Is a hair transplantation covered by health insurance?

As a rule, statutory health insurance does not cover the costs of a hair transplantation, as it is a cosmetic procedure. In rare medical cases (e.g., after accidents or burns), coverage may be possible. Private health insurance may partially cover depending on the contract.
